The Commodores are part of the Vanderbilt University athletics department and the university is located in Nashville, Tennessee. They are competing in the NCAA Division I-FBS Southeastern Conference. They have an all-time record of five hundred and fifty-six wins, five hundred and fifty-seven losses, and fifty ties putting them directly on the line of their .500 all-time win ratio. They have forwarded thirty Consensus All-Americans since their formation in 1890 and they hold thirteen conference titles, even though none of them are in the Southeastern Conference. The very first game in Tennessee was played between Vanderbilt University and the University of Nashville in 1890. The college was extremely successful in their debut as a founding member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association and enjoyed two national championship titles and even an unbelievable 1904 season when the team had four hundred and seventy-four points for and just four points against marking a more than four hundred point difference for the season. By 1932, the team joined the Southeastern Conference along with several other well known schools. Entering the Southeastern Conference proved to be a devastating blow to the team though as they suffered losing seasons, injuries, management shifts, and an overall loss of morale from repeated losses. This would continue until 2002, an entire seven decades, when Bobby Johnson was hired as head coach. After three quick season with consecutive two win, nine loss records, Johnson's plans finally come to fruition and suddenly the team won minor and key victories that were primarily important to the fans, and not well reflected in stats.
