The University of Toledo calls their athletics program the Toledo Rockets. Their football team is one of fifteen varsity sports programs and they play their home games at the Glass Bowl. The stadium was built in 1936 and has been used by the team since its opening. It can also hold just over twenty-six thousand spectators at Toledo, Ohio games. The athletics program head two short periods unaffiliated with any conference at the start of their competition, and one again just before joining the Mid-American Conference in 1951. In 1921, they were affiliated with the Northwestern Ohio Intercollegiate Athletic Association, then the Ohio Athletic Conference in 1932. Their rivalry with the Bowling Green Falcons is a more traditional bad blood rivalry than most college rivalries. In 1924, Bowling Green State University challenged the Toledo Captain's eligibility for play when they found out he played for a local team in Genoa, Ohio as well. The conference had no rules against it and the claim was dismissed. Students were charged higher ticket prices to opposing games as well, and then an attempted dog-napping was foiled against Toledo's mascot. In 1951, there was a brawl after a brawl broke out on field and Don Greenwood, the coach of Toledo, got involved. He later resigned when the university did not support his decision and he revealed that officials should have called penalties for excessive roughness and he claimed his players' safety was his responsibility.
