With a very unique mascot, the Horned Frogs represent the Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. The name is derived from the common name for a local horned lizard that is, quite obviously, neither a frog nor toad. They are members of the Mountain West Conference of the NCAA Division I-FBS League, formerly known as the Division I-A. From 1939 to 1997, before the arrival of Coach Dennis Franchione, the team had gone to eleven bowl games but only won once. They had also won six Southwest Conference titles. Upon the arrival of Coach Franchione in 1998, the team has won conference titles in the Western Athletic Conference, Conference USA, and the Mountain West Conference for a total of five. The team can now proudly say they've won at least ten games in each season for four of the last five years. The team's only national championship victories came three and one year before their sixty-seven year period of mediocrity beginning in 1939. Opened in 1930, the Amon G. Carter Stadium houses the team and is the venue for home games with over forty-four thousand simultaneous spectators per game. The players of the Horned Frogs have received some of College Football's highest honors with one member, Davey O'Brien having his name branded to the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, and an ample list of players and coaches inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
