San Diego State University's Athletic Programs are known as the Aztecs. Their mascot is an Aztec Warrior and the school's colors are scarlet, black, and gold. The football team is one of seventeen different varsity sports programs at the school. Newscasters often refer to the college sports as the "Montezuma Mesa" or saying "new from the mesa" to signify a shift to college sports involving the local team. The Aztecs are currently coached by Brady Hokes with a disappointing tenure so far at four wins to eight losses with the school. The Aztecs play their home games at Qualcomm Stadium which can store as many as seventy-one thousand spectators in the San Diego, California area. In spite of the current coaches, unimpressive debut, the school has maintained a very respectable all-time record of four hundred and sixty-five wins, three hundred and fifty-nine losses, and thirty-two ties since their establishment in 1921. They have gone to eight bowl games, and won half, but their last bowl win was in the Pasadena Bowl against the Boston Terriers in 1969, forty-one years ago. An interesting fact about the Aztecs is that over three fourths of their games, since beating the San Diego Marines in 1930, have been night games both home and away. 1961 to 1972 was an excellent decade for the Aztecs with Coach Don Coryell. He posted the school's best win percentage of any other coach at .840 spanning his eleven years with the team.
