The University of Mississippi, or Ole Miss, fields the Rebels. Their history began in 1890 when Dr. A.L. Bondurant asked for support from the student body to help create an athletic department for the college. Originally, the department was designed to coordinate college tennis, baseball, and football and the department was in full swing by 1893 when Bondurant became coach of the first Ole Miss Football team. They had a strong start by winning four of their first five games. In the following season, Bondurant promoted his part-time hire, Rhea, and the 1984 was another success with a six wins to one loss record. For two seasons, the school did not field a team first because of a yellow fever epidemic in 1897, and second because the Board of Trustees abolished football in all Mississippi schools for the duration of World War II. Even with two missing seasons, the university has a very consistent and solid record. They have four national titles from 1955, 1959, 1960, and 1962. They also have six conference titles from 1947, 1954, 1955, 1960, 1962, and 1963. Finally, they have one division title from 2003 and overall the team has advanced fifty-four Consensus All-Americans. Their all-time records for bowls is twenty-one wins and twelve losses while their all-time for regular season games is six hundred and fourteen wins, four hundred and sixty-four losses and thirty-five ties. Their most successful coach in modern history has been Houston Nutt turning the school away from a mediocre rut play since 2007.
