One of only three current Independent NCAA teams, the Navy Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy has remained a competitive football team unlike the Army Black Knights. They compete for the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy with two other Academies, the Army and the Air Force, every year and have held the trophy for the most recent streak while the Air Force still has four more possessions. The Midshipmen enjoy several rivalries with the Army-Navy games being the most prestigious. In fact, this game is televised every year by CBS and in 1963, was the first game to make use of the new instant replay system. During wartime, the schools line the jerseys and pads of former cadets along the edge of the field in remembrance of those cadets that will graduate and not return following their deployment. They also battle with the Air Force, Notre Dame, Maryland, and Rutgers. The Midshipmen keep a tidy all-time record of six hundred and forty wins, five hundred and twenty losses, and fifty-seven ties for a .549 win percentage. In postseason bowl games, they have pulled out seven wins in sixteen showings. They claimed one national title and have graduated two Heisman Trophy winners, 1960 Joe Bellino and 1963 Roger Staubach, along with twenty-three Consensus All-American players.
