The Liberty Flames are the athletics program out of Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. Their colors red, white, and navy blue give the team a purely American vibe and that is highlighted by their logo and mascot, the eagle named Sparky. They are an NCAA Division 1 team which competes in the Big South Conference; their football team competes in the FCS. Formed in 1971, they're the second youngest school in Division 1. The Sasser Cup is the coveted award in the Big South Conference and Liberty has won the award six times. Danny Rocco, Big South's Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2007, led the pack in their devastating competitive ways. He came from coaching the New York Jets and Virginia Cavaliers. In their 2007 season, Liberty dominated the Big Southern Conference championship beating out the highly skilled Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs 31-0. They absolutely dominated the game and took the championship by storm. Their overall record that season was 8-3 and their Big South Conference record was an unscathed 4-0. In 2008 Liberty won an impressive 11 games in a row with the last beating Gardner-Webb yet again with a commanding 20 point lead (30-10). Their record for the season was 10-2 and their Big South record was an unbeaten 5-0. This solidified their second conference win and upped the ante on their previous season's stats.
