The Golden Flashes are from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. Their current coach Doug Martin is entering his sixth year at the school, with a record of nineteen wins and thirty-nine losses. For the programs first twelve years, they were an independent school of the NCAA, but in 1932 became part of the Ohio Athletic Conference until 1951 when they transferred to the Mid-American Conference. Following World War II, the team was coached by Trevor Rees and successfully pulled the team into a period of stability for eighteen seasons where they routinely had winning seasons. He was head coach from 1946 to 1963 and is one of the few coaches to have a positive record at the college with ninety-two wins, sixty-three losses, and five ties for a win percentage of .591. He also took the school to its first of two bowl appearances in the Refrigerator Bowl. To date, the school has fallen shy of Rees' powerful coaching with an overall win percentage of .386 composed of three hundred wins, four hundred and eighty-five losses, and twenty-eight ties. They have won a conference title once, and advanced thirty-nine Consensus All-American Players. Their championship game in 1972, was won with Don James leading the team.
