While not the most successful school in the Big 12 Conference, the Iowa State Cyclones do have a strong history. Established in 1892 and with only a .457 win percentage, the team has found notoriety elsewhere. Their stadium, seating fifty-five thousand, the Jack Trice Stadium is named thus because of the death of the school's first black athlete. During a 1923 game against the University of Minnesota, Jack Trice suffered a collarbone injury on the second play of the night. Claiming to be fine, he continued to press forward, but only a few plays later, he was knocked down in a rush and trampled by atleast three Minnesota players. Again he claimed to be fine, but was immediately sent to a nearby hospital for his wounds. Erroneously, the hospital discharged him with only minor injuries but he subsequently died a few days later from internal bleeding in his lungs and torso. At his funeral, with over 4000 students and faculty of the school attending, it was discovered that he wrote a letter the night before the fateful game of his death expressing his need to prove himself and his race on the field. That he must push through hardship and do more than his share. Because of this, the student government petitioned to have the Cyclone Stadium renamed after the player. However, over the next seventy years, the plague and his existence fell into obscurity, only to resurface after a group of students discovered his commemorative honor next to the field claiming it was named after him. Shortly thereafter, with the support of students, faculty, and alumni of the school, the entire stadium was officially renamed the Jack Trice Stadium.
