The Cougar football team was established in 1946 at the University of Houston. They play their home games at Robertson Stadium, built in 1941, with up to thirty-two thousand on-lookers in Houston, Texas. Since they were established, they have changed conferences five times starting with the Lone Star Conference in 1946, Gulf Coast in 1949, Missouri Valley in 1951, Independent in 1960, Southwest in 1976, and now Conference USA since 1996. The team has won ten conference championships to date with four in the Missouri Valley Conference, four in the Southwest Conference, and two in Conference USA. They have advanced one Heisman Trophy winner, Andre Ware of 1989, and eighteen Consensus All-Americans. Their all-time win percentage is .528 with three hundred and sixty-five win, three hundred and twenty-six losses, and fifteen ties. Their rivals are the Rice Owls and the Texas Longhorns. The team's play style over the decades has shifted back and forth dramatically starting with a traditional rushing offense, then to Coach Pardee's "Run & Shoot" offense, then back to rushing, and another return to a significant passing game. Under Dana Dimel, the passing game was stressed, but sadly he could not pull off the wins to have his contract renewed. However, next in line, Art Briles, took advantage of Dimel's stress on maintaining good relations with local high school coaches and his multiple excellent recruitment seasons. A sudden deal with the Baylor Bears ripped Briles from the school, much to the outrage of fans, and Kevin Sumlin became coach in 2007.
