The Hawaii Warriors are part of the sports program at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. They are part of the Western Athletic Conference, and were the third non-BCS team to play in a BCS Bowl. The pacific island team has their home games out of the Aloha Stadium which can seat as many as fifty-thousand spectators and is currently coached by Greg McMackin. Coach McMackin has coached the team for two years and has seen relative success at the school despite having a losing record. He is currently at thirteen wins and fourteen losses. Their rivalries are Fresno State, Boise States and the BYU Cougars despite the immense distance between them caused by the Pacific Ocean. Their rivalry with Fresno State has heated as the years pass and more and more teams leave or join the Western Athletic Conference. They are now the two oldest members of the conference and continuously vie for the conference championship title. Their conflict with the Broncos started upon the entrance of Boise State to the conference, and was fueled in part by the unending defeats at the hands of the Broncos until the victory of the Warriors in 2007 at the championship game. Despite the other two being solid rivalries, the BYU rivalry is considered the most prestigious rival of Hawaii because of BYU’s one sided dominance of the Warriors and tradition of recruiting Hawaiian players to their team. This leads to the dwindled recruitment every season by the Warriors and more losses to the Cougars in the future. The Warriors’ first important victory was their inaugural game as the “Fighting Deans” against McKinley High School at another local college field.
