The Butler Bulldogs football team plays in the Pioneer League. The Pioneer League is a league that takes teams from the East, California, and the Midwest parts of the U.S. The Bulldogs compete in the Division 1 Football Championship Subdivision. Butler University as well as other schools in the Pioneer League do not award athletic scholarships to football players. Butler University plays in the Pioneer League along with a few other teams which include University of Dayton, Drake University, The University of Evansville, Valparaiso University, and University of San Diego. The Bulldogs play football in their stadium, The Butler Bowl. The stadium was built in 1927 and at its original stature held 36,000 spectators. The stadium was downsized in 1955 to hold just 20,000 people and just recently an addition of 7,500 seats, larger sidelines, and turf was added to increase the diversity of the field to accommodate other sports and events. With many more additions in the works, the stadium will hold more seating and a press box for media coverage of the athletic events underway. Butler began fielding football teams in 1884 and has proven to live up to its long history of balling. From the years 1934 to 1994, the Bulldogs have had amazing seasons competing in three playoff matches. Due to dominating the Pioneer League in 2009, Butler has earned a spot in the Gridiron Classic.
