Brigham University, established 1875, hosts the Cougars from Provo, Utah, USA. As part of the Mountain West Conference, the NCAA Division I-FBS School has claimed one national title, and twenty-three conference titles. The school's football program was founded in 1896 but was discontinued in 1903 until its rebirth in 1922. After its official start, the school was plagued with poor performances until six years later with the hire of Head Coach G. Ott Romney. He took the team to its first winning seasons.

Before World War II, the team had a record of sixty-five wins, fifty-one losses, and twelve ties by 1942. Eddie Kimball picked up where Ott Romney left off during the era. Fast forward to 2005, Bronco Mendenhall, formerly the team's defensive coordinator, is signed on as the school's head coach after Kyle Whittingham chose to go to the University of Utah. In Mendell's first season, he put up a strong show by taking the team to a winning season of six wins and five losses. This allowed the team to enter a bowl game and is often a welcome honor in the first season of a new head coach.

During his second season, he faced the school's longtime rivals at the University of Utah which resulted in an intense back and forth until the last second pass to an open player kneeling in the end zone. This play is commonly known as the "Answered Prayer" partially because of the receiver's posture and because it was the pass that clenched a thirty-three to thirty-one victory for the Cougars.
